Business Reporter & Editor

Tampa Bay Times (St. Petersburg Times)

Kyle’s journalism career included roles as a business reporter and editor at the Tampa Bay Times, where he won an award from the National Association of Real Estate Editors for the best newspaper real estate story in the country.

It’s where he learned what makes news — and what gets deleted unread.

Corporate Communications & Marketing

Walter Industries · Jim Walter Homes · Plum Creek

As Director of Corporate Communications for Walter Industries, then a $1.4-billion public company, Kyle handled media relations and employee communications and assisted with investor relations — including crisis communications for a mining accident, a serious environmental issue and a violent employee strike.

He went on to lead marketing and communications for Jim Walter Homes, which sold more than 3,500 homes a year in 18 states, and then sales and marketing for the land development division of Plum Creek (now part of Weyerhaeuser).

How Kyle works

Principles, not packages.

Every client is different. The approach is the same: find the real story, then put it everywhere it can do some good.

Start with the story

A reporter’s first question is “why would anyone care?” We answer it before we pitch, write or post anything.

Use every channel you have

As newsrooms have shrunk, PR has become much more than media relations. Your website, reviews, social channels and community work all carry the story too.

Learn from the “no”

You learn as much from the people who don’t sign up or don’t give as from those who do. Their reasons sharpen the message.

An extension of your team

Kyle works alongside your people — and can help train communicators at every level of experience along the way.

On the record
“AI is a great research tool. It’s a good starter kit. But speaking to your audience in a way that encourages them to act and to trust you? We’re just not there yet.”

Community

Invested in the places he calls home.

Kyle lives in West Asheville and serves on the Board of Directors of Blue Ridge Public Radio — a lifeline for Western North Carolina after Hurricane Helene.

When Helene hit in 2024, Parks PR’s Asheville clients were in the middle of the response: the Builders Association of the Blue Ridge Mountains helped residents avoid unscrupulous contractors, and the Land of the Sky Association of Realtors organized supply pickups and deliveries while keeping members informed.
